If you've made it this far, congratulations for progressing to the capstone Level III Nature-Based Teacher Certification course! This registration is for a hybrid course with monthly online learning (October - June 2025) followed by a culminating long weekend of training and celebration (Thurs., July 31st at 6 p.m. to Sun., Aug. 3, 2025 at 12 p.m.).

Our 36-hour capstone course combines deepening nature connection with a well-rounded approach to nature-based education, advocacy, and leadership. Offered as a hybrid course, the format includes online meetings with both live and self-directed time and field assignments that you will complete in your school or program setting. An in-person gathering is held to further learning, sharing, and celebration as a community.

Time commitment for the capstone course is 36 clock hours, plus time required to complete field assignments. Prerequisites: Attendees must complete levels 1 & 2 prior to taking level 3; see web for complete description.

    Course Description:
The capstone level of the certification combines deepening nature connection with a well-rounded approach to nature-based education, advocacy, and leadership. The hybrid course format includes online meetings with both live and self-directed time and a professional practicum that you will complete in your school or program setting. The in-person three-day gathering includes further learning and sharing as a community. The time commitment for the capstone course is 36 clock hours, plus time required to complete the practicum.

    Topics of Study:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in NBE: How can nature-based programs provide greater access to nature-based education? How can programs increase advocacy and inclusion efforts to support greater access to programs? Discover real life approaches to DEI and consider how to authentically work toward your own DEI policies and daily practices.

Mentoring & Reflective Teaching Practices: We know that the most effective teachers reflect on children’s needs and development in highly individualized ways. Likewise, we will consider how to reflect on our own interactions with children, families, colleagues, and the natural world to maintain a positive growth mindset necessary to thrive as a nature-based teacher. We will also consider the role of utilizing (and being) mentors in our teaching journey.

Financial Planning: Creating, or even just understanding, a program budget need not be complicated! Thoughtful budgets help ensure accessibility to your program with financial assistance and extra gear considerations, but that is only the start. Beyond basic supplies, family events, and guest presenters there are other considerations around liability insurance, gifts for teachers, and a contingency should you need to bring in support staff. These are the tip of the iceberg! Teacher pay is directly related to income and expenses, so this insight is useful whether you are currently a teacher or administrator. This session will examine items to consider in a program budget and get you thinking about how to help fundraise, advocate, and better support your program.  fair teacher pay

Assessing Your Program: One of the best ways we can improve the quality of what we offer to our learning communities is to actively engage in program assessment. This session explores several approaches to program assessment and helps you hone in on the values and attributes you most want to evaluate as part of the process.

Spirituality and Human-Nature Connection: One of the reasons families value a nature-based education is because wonder, awe, and curiosity are central to this approach to learning. Together we examine how these attributes support spirituality and help instill a deeper sense of connectedness to the natural world.

Naturalist Knowledge: Nature’s wonders are intricate and complex - we can spend a lifetime discovering them! Integral to our work as nature-based teachers, we will continue to explore the land, building on our naturalist knowledge of local habitats, wildlife, and possible risks to mitigate during outdoor learning. For our in-person gathering, we will incorporate hands-on earth skills as we continue to develop personal nature connection in community as a cohort of teachers.

    Workshop Descriptions

    Guided Forest Bathing Experience

    with Susie Van de Riet

During this forest bathing experience, we will spend approximately 2 hours connecting with our natural surroundings through bodyfulness and mindfulness invitations. It will not be a physically exerting activity. You'll want to dress comfortably for light movement and being outdoors in the evening. I invite you to bring a blanket, mat, or camping chair – whatever you feel most comfortable sitting on in the out of doors.

Spring Foraging: Tricks of the Trade

    with Angela Wildermuth

Wild edible plants are all around us - in every season and every locale. The benefits of knowing what plants can be safely eaten are many - for us and for the children we serve. This workshop will serve as an introduction to Foraging for beginners - including how to forage safely, what are common wild edible plants to find in Spring, and what are best practices for educators looking to share the joys of foraging with children.

A hike will be included in order to enjoy nature together and gain real practice identifying plants in the wild. In particular, we will keep an eye out for spring greens and edible mushrooms - pulling from our collective knowledge - and, if we're lucky, cook up something tasty with our finds!

    Slowing Down with Sit Spots

    with Jenn Thrasher

Participants will learn the difference between sit spots and nature journaling, as well as, brainstorm ideas of how the two can work together. We will then spend some time discussing safety in outdoor experiences, role of the teacher, and curriculum integration. With a hands on opportunity to journal in nature, participants will feel more confident teaching a variety of ways to integrate sit spots into their school day.

    Plant Identification

    with Steve Buback

This will be a field-based session where we learn to identify native plants found at Camp Takimina. We will use field characters including texture, smell, sight, and occasionally taste to learn a few plant families, and explore the historic and contemporary relevance of these plants to people and ecosystems.

Mindfulness and Song: Practices that Calm and Connect

    with Megan Fox

Mindfulness and singing have many benefits in common, like calming our nervous systems and connecting us with each other and the natural world. During this two hour session you will learn mindfulness practices for yourself and to share with children, and experience different mindfulness meditations. You will also join us in circle to learn nature songs for children and adults, and go home with a booklet of lyrics. All voices are welcome!

Roots of Inclusion: Therapeutic Tools for Children of All Abilities to Thrive in NaturePlay

with Tonya Gast and Stephanie Novacek

This interactive workshop offers an exploration of therapeutic ways to support whole child development in an inclusive, nature-based setting. Participants will be equipped with tools to foster social emotional intelligence, mindfulness skills and brain-body connections that nurture nervous system regulation for children of all abilities. Tips will also be provided on how to identify a child’s need for therapeutic resources. Come prepared in comfortable clothing to engage in mindful breathing and movement activities. Opportunity to brainstorm creative ideas & share resources among other professionals will also be a valuable part of this experience.

    Spring Plant Walk

    with Bodhi Vasilopoulos

Nature is abundant with food, medicine & more yet we have forgotten our ancient ways of working with the botanical and fungal relatives growing all around us. Learning about wild foods takes some time and focus but in the process we are rewarded with greater health, happiness, resilience and connection to the natural world. In this walk we will cover topics such as:

    • Plant and mushroom identification
    • How to harvest sustainably and prepare different wild edible foods throughout the seasons
    • Basics of botany, mycology, field herbalism and medicinal preparations
    • Planting & propagation techniques
    • Agroforestry principles & practices
    • Temperate ecology...and more!

    Social Emotional Learning Through Nature

    with Jason Lee

Being in Nature is naturally calming to most people. As Nature Based Educators, especially for those working in Early Childhood, it is so important to help children practice social and emotional skills that will be necessary throughout life. If planted and nurtured correctly children will grow in important skills like problem solving, emotion identification, emotional regulation, empathy and more. Come learn nature-based mindfulness and self-regulation techniques to help guide students through their ever growing emotional awareness!

    Natural Assessment: Documenting Emergent Learning

    with Monica French

Meaningful documentation in emergent learning settings makes the purpose of an event, experience, or development visible. In this course, educators will learn how to naturally build an assessment portfolio for children that demonstrates student learning through evidence such as photographs, artwork, observational drawings, records of conversations, and anecdotal notes. Learn to transform these artifacts to tell a story that takes your audience deeper into children's wonderings, observations, and learning.

    Firemaking

with Bill Kaczor and Eden Cornelius

Get ready for an outdoor adventure as we dive into the age-old art of generating fire through friction in our interactive workshop! Experience the captivating skill of using a bow drill for fire creation, an essential survival technique that also sparks an exciting journey of discovery. This isn't just about learning a useful skill - it's about sparking a sense of wonder and admiration for our ancestors who relied on this incredible method for survival and advancement! This is your chance to tap into the wisdom of the past, so don't miss out!
